MAYO – July 4 Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources Provides Update on Eagle Gold Mine Incident
The failure occurred on June 24, 2024 at the heap-leach facility, which uses a cyanide solution to percolate through crushed ore to extract gold.
Elevated levels of cyanide have been detected in a waterway following the equipment failure that caused an ore spill (it spilled over an embankment) the resulting landslide was about 1.5 km long. Approx 300 million litres of cyanide solution had escaped. Cyanide levels of about 40 parts per billion were collected from a creek, the allowable is five parts per billion.
The cause of the failure has yet to be determined.
