EAGLE BAY Water Management Services – BWN issued July 26 due to unacceptable water quality results (E. coli and Total Coliform are both present in recent samples).
MAYNE ISLAND (Village Point Improvement District) – UPDATE BWN was issued as a precautionary measure as a result of maintenance works, water storage shortage and a major leak.
There is an issue with the filtration system; the pump has been over worked due to extremely low water storage at the treatment plant. To address this problem the media (sand, gravel, etc) was replaced in all three filtration tanks at the plant and will be followed by a backwash to remove fine material. Because of the low storage situation, they haven’t had enough water to complete this step.
Water storage is critically low (below 10% of capacity); water is being trucked in to deal with the shortage. There is a significant leak in the system. Crews have narrowed the location but there’s more work to do to pinpoint the leak and stop it; they are considering bringing in a detection specialist.
Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) – SHORTAGE As of July 23, all water systems operated by the RDN are at Stage 4 water use. On July 18 the Province government elevated eastern Vancouver Island to Drought Level 4 – Adverse impacts to socio-economic or ecosystem values are likely.
