ONTARIO
ISSUED
COLLINGWOOD – SPILL April 2 Heavy rains have overwhelmed Collingwood's wastewater treatment system, causing wastewater to bypass the full treatment system and overflow into Georgian Bay.
There was also a partial bypass last weekend from March 29 and March 30, during which 5,000 cubic metres of partially treated wastewater skipped the UV disinfection step before overflowing into the bay.
ORILLIA – SPILL April 2 When it rains, it pours or catches fire. Late Wednesday night lightning strike sparks fire at Orillia's wastewater treatment centre. On top of that, heavy, driving rains dropped more than 50 mm of rain in a short period of time.
This follows in the aftermath of a devastating weekend ice storm that plunged Southern Ontario into darkness, five days later, nearly 200,000 Ontario residents are still without power. Orillia is in a state of emergency due to the storm's impact, as is each of the surrounding townships and the County of Simcoe.
Due to heavy rains in addition to seasonal snow and ice melt, water levels have exceeded the optimal operation levels for the wastewater system furthermore the damage sustained has affected the normal operation of the treatment system, which is currently not operating at full capacity. The City has been actively working to manage the situation including hauling sewage to alternate facilities in an effort to reduce impacts and work is already underway to repair and restore full function as quickly and safely as possible. Despite these efforts backups are occurring, residents are experiencing sewer backups, odours or slower drainage in some areas aswell, the wastewater system continues to bypass partially treated sewage into Lake Simcoe. This ongoing bypass has the potential to impact private drinking water sources that draw directly from the lake.
SEVERN (Westshore) – BWA issued April 1 due to a generator failure at the Westshore Wastewater and Water Treatment Plant.
SEVERN (Coldwater) – SPILL April 1 due to the significant rainfall and resulting flooding in Coldwater this week, the Coldwater Wastewater Treatment Plant is currently experiencing a bypass event. Residents in Coldwater are asked to please reduce their wastewater. Potable water stations are available in Washago and Coldwater for residents due to continued power outages that compromise the proper functioning of their well supply.
RAMARA - April 1 Water Quality in the areas of Brechin and Lagoon City may be compromised due to elevated turbidity levels in the raw water supply. If turbidity levels continue to rise, a boil water advisory will be put in place. Potable water stations are available at the Fire Hall and Barnfield Point Rec Centre.
