PIRATES, POACHERS AND A PANDEMIC – THE SEA SHEPHERD DEFENDS MARINE WILDLIFE
By Suzanne Forcese
Update: Original Article
CAPTAIN PAUL WATSON & THE SEA SHEPHERD MARINE WILDLIFE CONSERVATION
While many countries have reduced or even stopped monitoring illegal fishing activity in their waters during the pandemic, Sea Shepherd was able to stay on the frontlines to defend, conserve and protect marine wildlife and their habitats in direct-action campaigns from Australia and West Africa to Europe and North America.
In a critical new collaboration, Sea Shepherd has partnered with Conflict Islands Conservation Initiative and Animal Assist to protect endangered turtles from poaching in the conflict Islands, Papua New Guinea (https://youtu.be/q-6ts9KylwI)
With both the Conrad and the small boat, Hunter, Sea Shepherd Italy’s efforts with Operation SISO has more than improved. The Hunter, acting as a fast-scouting boat, finding illegal fishing devices, and the Conrad, with the ability to retrieve the gear, have together removed over 230 illegal fish-aggregating devices in the past months – some over 3000 meters long. For teachers and those who are still in lockdown and with the kids at home in virtual classes, WATERTODAY also discovered Sea Shepherd’s new LessonUp channel that provides free resources on marine conservation topics from illegal fishing to plastic pollution.
