La MARTRE, 25 yrs under a BWA – February 27 CBC reports that the cost of a new distribution system, that is scheduled to begin this spring, will be steep for the small community of approximately 200 residents. In addition to having to pay for connections and property tax increases, some residents will also have to pay for archaeological digs commissioned by the Ministry of Culture. The cost of archaeological excavations (on private land) is estimated at $506,468. This amount would be distributed among the landowners whose land has been identified as likely to contain artifacts. This archaeological site is estimated to be 10,000 years old.
This is one of many obstacles the Municipality has faced in trying to provide potable drinking water to their residents; a BWA has been in effect since August 24, 2000 due to numerous leaks in its dilapidated water distribution system. The total cost of the project is estimated at more than $12 million.
