UPDATE
SALT SPRING ISLAND (Highland-Fernwood WS) – July 28 UPDATE. The WQA issued for high concentrations of MANGANESE remains in effect. This is the first time this System has experienced such high concentrations of manganese. CRD Investigations have revealed that the cause of the elevated levels in the drinking water is a result of extraction of raw water from a different and deeper intake source on St. Mary Lake. The new and deeper intake was part of a project that was commissioned earlier this year. It has been determined that the deeper water in this location is oxygen-depleted during the summer, which can cause manganese to be released from lake sediments. Currently, CRD staff are working on solutions that involve the installation of a temporary intake as well as the potential implementation of additional water treatment for manganese.
