Press Release… SMOKY LAKE COUNTY – DROUGHT July 24 Smoky Lake County Council unanimously voted to declare a Municipal Agricultural Disaster in response to the ongoing drought and extremely dry conditions impacting the region. The declaration is intended to draw attention to the significant challenges local producers are currently experiencing and will continue to face in the coming months. ST. MARYS RIVER – OIL SPILL July 29 prompts Health Advisory; Algoma Public Health advises users of the St. Marys River along the western shore of St. Joseph Island that an oil spill has been reported.
Do not drink, bath or shower with this water; if your drinking water intake is located in the St. Marys River downstream of Sailor’s Encampment or you have a well close to the shoreline, there may be a risk of contamination resulting from this spill.
Furthermore, do not use St. Marys River for recreational purposes (i.e. swimming, kayaking, fishing). This advisory will remain in effect until further information is available.
The incident involved the Presque Isle, a 1,000-foot integrated tug and barge which reported having maneuverability issues; the vessel was in ballast with no cargo. It is currently anchored, and a marine investigation has been initiated by the US Coast Guard.
This advisory does not apply to the Township of St. Joseph / Richard’s Landing Municipal Drinking Water System; there is no concern relating to this System, at the moment.
