UPDATE

EDEN TOWNSHIP (Long Lake) – DNC remains in effect for Arsenic.

Rehabilitation work has begun at the Long Lake Gold Mine Site, nearly a century after the mine shuttered. This work is required to help mitigate the spread of contaminants, such as arsenic, which have been leaching into the surrounding environment including the area's drinking water. Rehabilitation work is scheduled for completion in 2029.

The contaminated mine site is located at the south end of Long Lake, approx. 6kms south of the Greater Sudbury Area. The mine was operational between 1908 and 1939 during which time approximately 200,000 tonnes of tailings and 52,000 ounces of gold were produced. Mine tailings were discharged directly to the environment without containment.

Affected area includes Long Lake, Round Lake, Penage Lake and all the rivers and streams that connect these lakes. It is estimated that a third of the contamination lays within the Atikameksheng Anishnawbek Wetlands located in Whitefish Lake 6.

Generations have been affected by higher-than-acceptable Arsenic levels. The maximum acceptable concentration (MAC) for arsenic is 10 ug/L, which has been exceeded by as much as 400 per cent posing serious, irreversible health risks. Long Lake is considered a densely populated area with approx. 1,000 permanent and seasonal residents.

France Gélinas MPP has been drawing attention to this environmental disaster since 2009. A Drinking Water Advisory has been in place since 2012. Local food sources have been annihilated; vegetation, fish, fowl are inconsumable, and wildlife continues to die.

It is disappointing to see the Government’s rehabilitation efforts moving along as fast a herd of turtles.

It is far simpler and cost effective to protect and prevent, than it is to clean up, restore and monitor environmental desecration which diminishes quality of the environment and threatens biodiversity and ecosystem health.
