ALBERTA

ISSUED

CALAHOO Community Centre – BWO issued December 18 due to Total Coliform bacteria detected in recent samples.

CALGARY (Northwest Area) – BWO issued December 30 following a major water main break that resulted in a significant flooding incident. The sudden rush of water stranded 13 people, who were rescued by firefighters from their vehicles, which had become quickly submerged, stuck or stalled in freezing waters.

This break is being attributed to the Bearspaw South Feeder Main, the same main involved in the catastrophic rupture in June 2024. At the time of the City’s announcement, it was too early to confirm the cause or extent of the damage and even though crews are working around the clock, the length of the advisory was indeterminate, however temporary and localized to Bowness, Parkdale, Montgomery and Point McKay communities. The break has affected water service and compromised quality to approx. 2,100 customers.

The City endeavors to manage the Water Supply during this critical period, their efforts include but not limited to:

  • Enacting the Municipal Emergency Plan.
  • Implementing Stage 4 Water Restrictions for all outdoor water use, such as rinks and snow-making.
  • Indoor facilities such as pools, rinks and recreational complexes are expected to implement and adhered to their water reduction plans.
  • Encouraging residents to be mindful of their water usage, consumption and conservation practices. Residents are expected to immediately reduce their water usage, in the very least by:
    • Limiting showers to under 3 mins.
    • Flush toilets only when necessary.
    • Run dishwashers and laundry only when full.
